impactful stories.

Trellis Society is a Calgary-based social services agency that offers a comprehensive continuum of 33 programs for over 9,000 people each year designed to support children, youth, families and communities.

For two years, my role at Trellis was to capture and share stories of hurt, growth, and the efforts made to create community resources.

The many means of

making.

At Trellis Society, being the Digital Media Coordinator meant creating in a variety of ways. Photography, video production, graphic design, illustration, animation, and website design.

In order to be accessible and attempt to connect with folks where they’re at - different mediums have their own purpose.

Photo & Video Production

My primary function as Digital Media Coordinator was to tell stories - a camera is an incredible tool.

There is so much that goes on at an organization of Trellis’ size. I was normally found capturing photos and videos of events, interviews, and programs.

Visual Communication

Maintaining the visual component elements for such a large organization requires a multitude of media.

I helped plan, create, and execute campaigns and stories via 2D and 3D visual means. This involved graphic design, motion graphic design, document design, marketing materials - the works!

Indigenous Initiatives

As an Indigiqueer maker, one of the most rewarding parts of my role as Digital Media Coordinator at Trellis Society, was to use my skills to tell the stories of Indigenous youth and families.

What I’m able to bring to these stories is to film, edit, and produce a final video that will uplift the narratives, create awareness, and demand change for the better. My hope as a filmmaker is to use my skills for positive impact while honouring the truth and pain of Indigenous histories.

Trellis’ Honor Song

Take a closer look at the Honor Song that was gifted to Trellis Society from Siksika Nation's Spike Eaglespeaker Jr.

I was privileged to travel to Siksika Nation to meet Spike, conduct this interview, and capture his performance.

Wahnita’s Story

“Wahnita is a creative and bright twenty-year-old who recently graduated from Trellis’ Youth Transitioning to Adulthood (YTA) program. Going into YTA, Wahnita had been through a lot in her life and already had a strong sense of independence.”

For Wahnita’s story I did every role/task to create this production. Audio recording, filming a two-angle interview, capturing b-roll, compiling footage, creating motion graphics, audio mixing, and asset delivery.

HASHIM’S STORY

“For youth facing homelessness, they often carry the weight of family breakdown and trauma. At Avenue 15, the only youth emergency shelter in Calgary, every youth is offered a safe, supportive environment where they can heal and begin to build a strong future for themselves. This was the experience for one youth named Hashim.”

For Hashim’s story I did every role/task to create this production. Audio recording, filming multiple two-angle interview, capturing b-roll, compiling footage, creating motion graphics, audio mixing, and asset delivery.

Stampede Work Experience Program

In 2022, Trellis celebrated it’s 50th year of partnership with The Calgary Exhibition and Stampede to host the Work Experience Program. Trellis will hire and train over 250 youth ages 13 to 24, along with 40 adult supervisors to help keep the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” clean for the 11 days of the Stampede.

For this production I did every role/task to create this production. Audio recording, filming multiple interviews, capturing b-roll on the Stampede grounds, compiling footage, creating motion graphics, audio mixing, and asset delivery.
